Christmas Films by Hannah, Samantha and Louise

There are many different Christmas films but these are some of the most popular.

The Snowman:

The Snowman is based on the children’s book by Raymond Briggs which was published in 1978. It was made into a movie in 1982. The movie is about a young boy who builds a snowman that comes to life on Christmas Eve. The film stars David Bowie. It was nominated for an Oscar. The film is wordless except from the main song ‘Walking in the Air’.


The movie Elf came out on November 7th 2003. It stars Will Ferrell and Zooey Deschannel. It is about a baby named Buddy who crawls into Santa’s bag on Christmas Eve and travels to the North Pole and is raised by elves. It made $225,443,451 worldwide and won the ASCAP award.

The Polar Express:

This movie came out on the 10th of December 2004. It is based on the book ‘The Polar Express’ by Chris Van Allsburg. It is about a boy who doesn’t believe in Santa until he boards a magical train taking him to the North Pole. It stars Tom Hanks and Josh Hutcherson. The Polar Express is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2006 as the first all digital capture film.

The Grinch:

The Grinch was released on the 8th of November 2000. It is based on the Dr. Suess book ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’. It is about how the Grinch learns to love Christmas with the help from Cindy Lou Who. It won an Oscar and 16 other awards. It stars Jim Carrey and Taylor Momsen.

Miracle on 34th Street:

The latest version of Miracle on 34th Street was released on November the 18th 1994. The film was based on the original movie from 1947. It is about a little girl who doesn’t believe in Santa Claus until her mum hires him to work in the shopping centre. It stars Mara Wilson (also in Matilda). It was nominated for a Saturn award.

Home Alone:

Home Alone was released on November 10th 1990. It is  about a young boy who is accidentally left behind when his family go on holiday over Christmas, and he has to learn how to protect his home and himself from two burglars. It stars MacCaulay Culkin. The movie was nominated for two Oscars.

Deck the Halls:

Deck the Halls was released on November the 22nd 2006. It is about two neighbours competing to see who can decorate their house the best for Christmas hoping that their house can be seen from space. It stars Danny De Vito and Matthew Broderick. The movie has earned $47,231,070 worldwide.
